Glittertind

Glittertind in Jotunheimen has an elevation of 2452 meters above sea level, making it Norway's second highest mountain. Glittertinden, historically known as Glittertind, is a popular destination for hikers, accessible via marked trails from both Glitterheim and Spiterstulen Turisthytte. The hike to Glittertind is considered challenging due to its length and elevation gain, but it offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the most stunning views in the Norwegian mountain landscape. Historically, Glittertind was once considered Norway's highest mountain, thanks to a glacier that crowned its summit. In the early 20th century, the glacier's peak was measured at 2,481 meters above sea level. However, significant melting over the past few decades has reduced its height, and in 2020, the peak was measured at 2,452 meters. By September 2023, the once proud glacier had completely melted away, marking a significant shift in the mountain's physical structure and ecosystem.

Glittertind from Glitterheim or Spiterstulen

From Glitterheim, the easiest route offers a western approach via Steinbudalen, which leads up to the snow and ice cap that once covered the summit. Alternatively, hikers can start from Spiterstulen in Visdalen, a trek that usually takes around 9 hours round-trip. This route provides a different experience, traversing varied terrain before reaching the summit with an impressive view. The bedrock on Glittertind primarily consists of gabbro, typical of Jotunheimen, creating a dramatic silhouette against the sky. From the summit, one can enjoy the view over Jotunheimen National Park.

Even though the summit historically has been covered in snow and ice, it now offers an almost snow-free experience in the summer. Glittertind represents not only a physical challenge for those wishing to ascend it but also a deep connection to Norway's scenic surroundings and cultural heritage. Whether you're an experienced mountain hiker or a family on an adventure, Glittertind offers a memorable and varied experience in the heart of the Norwegian mountain landscape.

History

Glittertind has a rich history, with the first known ascent made by the surveyor Harald Nicolay Storm Wergeland and the farmer Hans Sletten in 1841. There is some uncertainty about whether they reached the actual summit, but the famous hunter Jo Gjende confirmed his presence at the summit the following year. Since then, the mountain has been a popular destination for hikers, with the first tourist lodge, Glitterheim, established by the Norwegian Trekking Association in 1898.
